In no circumstances will CAA be acceptable in Northeast India: Protesting organisations

With Centre issuing gazette notification granting powers to authorities in 13 districts of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab to accept, verify and approve citizenship applications from members of minority communities, organisations opposing Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stated that in no circumstances CAA be will acceptable in Northeast India.

All Assam Student Union (Aasu) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP)stated they will continue opposing the CAA.

AASU 's Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya tweeted,”@HMOIndia’s attempt attempt of salvaging its vote bank through #CAA is abominable.Illegal infiltration continues to tear the very fabric of NE. Violative of Assam Accord,CAA threatens our indigeneity.#AASU & #NESO shall continue to resist the unconstitutional CAA @narendramodi.”


AJYCP leader Palash Changmai said that CAA will dilute Assamese identity and this will not be acceptable. “We will oppose it.”

Assam witnessed bitter protests against Assam in 2019 and early 2020 when the CAA — which aims to make minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship — was passed by Parliament. There was a large-scale violence curfew for several days.

AASU has been opposing CAA stating that it is against the accord.

According to the Assam accord, signed after a six-year-long anti-migrant movement led by the All Assam Students Union, the cut-off date for detecting foreigners in Assam is March 24, 1971.
