The political temperature in Karnataka has spiked as Congress minister Shivanand Patil recently submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker UT Khader - but with a twist. Patil, an MLA from Basavana Bagevadi, made his resignation conditional, saying it should only be accepted if expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal also steps down.

This dramatic move stems from a long-standing personal and political rivalry between the two Lingayat leaders. Yatnal, the BJP MLA from Vijayapura City, was expelled from the party in March for making derogatory comments about BJP leadership, including former CM B.S. Yediyurappa. On April 30, during a public address, Yatnal challenged Patil and another Congress MLA to resign and contest independently, warning he would "question their family lineage" if they didn't respond by May 9.

Patil responded by visiting the Speaker and submitting a resignation letter, claiming he had no issues within the Congress or with the CM, but would contest independently to "protect his honour." However, Speaker Khader said the letter couldn't be accepted as it was in the wrong format and conditional. Yatnal dismissed the resignation as "a political stunt", saying he would only resign after Patil's is formally accepted.

This episode underscores how deep-rooted personal enmities within the same community often spill beyond party lines in Karnataka politics - a recurring theme in the state.
