In case of tie,Speaker votes with govt: Sangma

Former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma said that the Speaker ideally votes with the govt in case of a tie.

NEW DELHI: Praising Speaker Somnath Chatterjee for turning a deaf ear to the CPI(M)'s demand that he resign and vote against the government, former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma on Monday said that the Speaker ideally votes with the government in case of a tie.

"The Speaker should uphold the dignity of the post. He is right in not resigning as the Speaker does not belong to any political party," Sangma told reporters in parliament premises as the House began to debate a trust vote moved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that is expected to have a photo finish.

Sangma was accompanied by his daughter Agatha Sangma who took oath as MP on Monday.

When asked what the Speaker should do in case there is a tie in the trust vote, Sangma said, "Normally, the Speaker votes to save the government. This is the convention internationally. But this is not binding on the Speaker."
The debate on the trust vote began today and the voting is likely to take place tomorrow evening.

There are indications that it will be a close call for the UPA government as the MPs for and against the confidence vote are almost equal in number
