Kerala had become the first Indian state to initiate adopting transgenders into mainstream society by building a ‘Transgender Policy’ in 2016, following which the Kochi Metro Rail Limited started offering jobs to the transgender community.

Recently Kochi Metro Rail broke new grounds in the gender equality sphere, by recruiting 23 transgenders for its upcoming operations which is due to start in June.

The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has finished conducting the second round of on-the-job training for the transgender employees it hired.
The metro agency is the first government-owned company in India to formally appoint them. The better educated members are likely to be posted at ticket counters while the rest will work in the housekeeping section.

Training procedure
As part of the training process, the recruits were taken on metro stations and were introduced to the various facilities and the functioning of the trains. KMRL said the training would continue for the next five days.

Empowering queer community
KMRL’s unique decision to hire 23 transgenders from the self-help group Kudumbashree to work at its trains and stations has been highly appreciated as a step that goes towards empowering the weaker members of the community.

Phase-1 to start soon
The Kochi Metro will cover a distance of 13 km – Aluva to Palarivattom – in the first phase, starting June. It will have 11 stops, with a total runtime of 20 minutes.
