CHICAGO: The governor of Illinois was released on bond Tuesday after being charged with trying to sell an appointment to president-elect Barack Obama's recently vacated US Senate seat.

Governor Rod Blagojevich, 51, appeared in court in sneakers and exercise clothes and made no comment as he posted a 4,500 dollar bond, an AFP journalist reported.

US attorney Patrick Fitzgerald laid out the charges earlier at a press conference here, just hours after the Democrat governor was taken into custody at his home.
