IIT-Delhi to review expulsions of 12 SC/ST students
The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi on Tuesday agreed to review the expulsion of 12 SC/ST students for poor performance after its Director was summoned by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to explain the action.
"We will review the cases(of expulsion)," said Director Prof. Surendra Prasad, who was asked by the Commission to look into the matter and follow UGC guidelines.
A decision to summon the Director was taken after a complaint was registered with the Commission by the father of one of the Backward Class students who was asked to leave the college because of "very poor performance".
Prasad has assured the commission that he would talk to the students and try to sort out the matter, Commission Chairperson Buta Singh said.
The 12 expelled students also had a meeting with Singh. The students claimed that they were discriminated against as they belonged to the SC community.
Singh said the premier institution had been flouting UGC guidelines on the reservation policy and it must adopt the rules immediately.
The institution, this year, had asked 20 undergraduate students including the 12 belonging to the SC/ST community to leave the campus as their performance was found "below the required minimum level for continuation".
The complainant alleged that the IIT administration had deliberately handpicked the students from the SC/ST community to throw them out of the institute.
