MUMBAI: Efforts to free the Indian postgraduate student, Vikram Buddhi, from a US federal prison are getting stronger with the alumni of various IITs coming together to press for his release.

Supreme Court lawyer and member of the IIT-Delhi senate Somnath Bharti told TOI, A very bright mathematics scholar, Vikram Buddhi, who has also won an award for best lecturer at the University of Purdue, is languishing in a US jail without any evidence for over three years. Several IIT alumni, under the umbrella organisation Pan-IIT , will fight for justice for him.

Pan-IIT, which has many influential members in the US, will have a detailed discussion with the Indian ministry of external affairs (MEA) to put pressure on the US and seek justice for Buddhi, Bharti added.

There are many loopholes in the court trial. In fact, it is surprising how someone could be kept behind bars without a single hard evidence against them. We want a fair trial and justice for the Indian student, said Bharti.

Buddhi is accused of threatening US leaders by posting messages on a site between December 2005 and January 2006. The Purdue University campus , where he was living as a PG student, has a history of its internet systems being hacked.
