IIM-L objects to umbrella board plan
The Central government’s plan to consider setting up a pan-IIM board on lines of the RC Bhargava IIM review committee report has hit a roadblock.
These objections take on added importance as IIM-Lucknow, unlike the other IIMs, is generally seen to be more in concurrent with governments views, especially on these subjects. Objections to the review committee have been registered by IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Bangalore as well.
In a letter to Union education secretary RP Agarwal, IIM-Lucknow chairman J J Irani has said that the pan-IIM board would negatively impact the freedom that is essential for academic excellence and development of individual IIMs. The IIM-Lucknow board, which met to discuss Bhargava report, was particularly concerned about this supra-board that
has been suggested.
Wary of adverse publicity, sources at IIM-Lucknow have suggested that the institutes objection should not be seen as a clash with the ministry of human resource development.
The ministry has asked for the feedback on these recommendations and IIM-Lucknow is merely letting it know what the board thinks of the suggestions. This should not be seen as the institute going up against the ministry, a senior member of the board said.
The board would not be involved in the day-to-day management of the institutes, but approve vision and mission statements, give guidelines for framing policy, and approve two-year business plans. Once in two years, the board would also review the performance of each IIM. It would also advise the government on all matters relating to the IIMs, and the government would act only on advise of this board.
