CHENNAI: DMK today alleged that Centre's proposed IIM Bill was intended towards "curtailing" autonomy of the premier B-Schools and appealed the government to consult stakeholders and adopt a cautious path before passing it.

"The union government intends to curtail the autonomy of the IIMs through the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2015," DMK Treasurer MK Stalin said.

"Though ostensibly aimed at empowering the IIMs to award degrees instead of diplomas, the bill will in effect increase government control over these institutions and will lead to micro-management of these institutes of excellence," he said.

The bill seeks to increase Central government's role in fee determination, service conditions of faculty, academic structure and curriculum, Stalin added.

"I therefore appeal to the union government to adopt a cautious path before passing such a bill (and) consult all the stakeholders including IIMs and respective state governments," he said in a statement.
