If Citizenship Bill isn’t passed, 17 Assembly seats will go to Jinnahs, says Assam finance minister

Sarma said: “NRC’s purpose is to weed out the Jinnahs. If we do not implement clause 6, Badruddin Ajmal will be the chief minister and if there is no citizenship bill, at least 17 seats will go to the Jinnahs.”

“This is a fight between Jinnah’s legacy and India’s legacy,” Sarma said on Sunday.
GUWAHATI: Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said if Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, is not passed, at least 17 Assam assembly seats would go to the Jinnahs. National Register of Citizens (NRC) is meant to drive out the Jinnahs from Assam, Sarma has said.

“This is a fight between Jinnah’s legacy and India’s legacy,” Sarma said on Sunday.

Sarma said: “NRC’s purpose is to weed out the Jinnahs. If we do not implement clause 6, Badruddin Ajmal will be the chief minister and if there is no citizenship bill, at least 17 seats will go to the Jinnahs.”

Badruddin Ajmal, chief of All India United Democratic Front, is a member of Parliament from Dhubri.

Sarma said the formation of Bezbaruah committee is historic. He said state government would ask the Centre to replace “Assamese” with “indigenous” in clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
