What will happen when Idukki Dam shutters are open
There are five electrically-powered shutters for Cheruthoni dam. Each shutter will only be raised by 10-15 cm. 10 million cubic feet of water, enough to generate power worth Rs 220 crore, will flow out of that gap.
Water will flow to the Cheruthoni river reaching Aluva within six hours. Water will eventually merge with Arabian Sea after flowing through dedicated channels in Ernakulam, Edamalayar, Malayattoor and Kalady.

Built for Idukki hydroelectric project
The dam's shutters were last opened in 1992. This is the first time that it will attain its full level during the South West Monsoon period. The arch reservoir comprises three dams -Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu, built for the Idukki Hydroelectric Project. Idukki dam is used to store the water while the latter two are meant to route it to the powerhouse.

Plans for evacuation
Residents living on the banks of the water flow path will be shifted only after the red alert is issued. Chief engineer of the dam said that a proper warning will be issued before moving people.
A survey on the total number of people who would have to be evacuated in case the shutters are opened was already been taken. The Disaster management authority has prepared a list of buildings in and around 100 metres of the dam area with the help of satellite pictures and details of people residing in these buildings would be collected.
