NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a show cause notice to a Hindi news channel asking it to explain the telecast of a programme related to riots in Western Uttar Pradesh whose content could have affected communal harmony.

Sources said that on September 8, the channel had carried comments made by an individual in a special programme regarding which the Electronic Media Monitoring Cell (EMMC) reported to the I&B ministry.

The contents of the programme were not found to be conducive to communal harmony and a show cause notice has been issued to the channel asking it to reply within three days, a source said.

The channel has also been told not to retelecast the programme.
