IARC asks Berman to hold Mark-Up next week on Indo-US deal
IARC has asked the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee to hold a Mark-Up next week, waiving the 30-day rule, so that committee can pass the US-Indo nuclear agreement.

WASHINGTON: The Indian American Republican Council (IARC) has asked the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee to hold a Mark-Up next week, waiving the 30-day rule, so that committee can pass the US-India civilian nuclear agreement and pave way for a vote on it for the full House prior to the scheduled adjournment on September 26.
A Mark-Up is the meeting of a Committee held to review the text of a bill before reporting it out. Committee offer and vote on proposed changes to the bill's language, known as amendments.
Most mark-ups end with a vote to send the new version of the bill to the floor for final approval.
"With the visit of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next week, passage of this important legislation in a timely fashion will permanently cement US-India relations," the IARC Board of Directors said in a letter to Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Howard Berman.
"After more than three years of negotiations and successful agreements by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the time is ripe to complete the agreement and move our two nations forward on solid footing," the letter said.
The leaders of Indian American community said that "it is time to finalise the agreement so that business and political leaders in both the nations have the certainty they need to successfully lay the foundation for civilian nuclear cooperation in the years ahead."
