IAF helps restore power in Jammu & Kashmir

Indian Air Force experts were winched down from a helicopter from a height of about seven to eight feet to help repair transmission lines snapped due to last week's heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir's snowbound Himalayan Pir Panjal range.

JAMMU: Indian Air Force experts were winched down from a helicopter from a height of about seven to eight feet to help repair transmission lines snapped due to last week's heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir's snowbound Himalayan Pir Panjal range. The repairs at an altitude of around 13,500 ft helped restore power supply to the Valley.

Defense spokesman Lt Col Rajesh Kalia said, "The crew displayed superior flying skills and experience to winch down the repair party at the site on January 8 at around 1630hours." He said the task was extremely difficult due to high velocity wind which made it difficult for the crew to hover steadily. "The repair party was able to do the repairs within few hours and the power supply to the entire Srinagar Valley was restored on January 8,'' he said.

"A similar task was undertaken on January 9 in winching down four personnel from a height of seven to eight feet for further repair of the tower," he said.

Lt Col Kalia said Wing Commander Nitin Welde led the mission and Flight Lieutenant R Nainwal assisted him. "Squadron leader Abhijeet Kumar was the winch operator," he said.

The defense spokesman said the IAF first recced the area where the power lines had snapped between Ramban to Banihal. "A tower near Ramsu village was identified as damaged. Since there was no helipad/landing site near the tower, it was decided that the repair team would be winched down from the helicopter."
