Hyderabad braces for heavy rainfall during weekend

According to the IMD, Hyderabad forecast, the southwest monsoon over Telangana has been active in the last 24 hours due to which not only Hyderabad but various other districts too will experience light to moderate rain/thundershowers during the weekend. “With the formation of another cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal, which is moving westwards towards Odisha and West Bengal, the state is expected to witness rainfall for at least five more days,” said YK Reddy, director (in-charge) of IMD, Hyderabad.
However, Met department officials said that public need not panic. “Only 25 percent areas across Telangana are likely to receive rainfall between 5-10 cms. Rest of the areas are expected to receive light rainfall of below 5 cms,” said Reddy.
Private weather forecasting agencies too have predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Telangana.
According to Skymet, one of the agencies, a trough is seen extending from North Bay of Bengal up to east central Arabian Sea across Telangana. “In wake of these weather systems prevailing over the state, southern parts of Telangana will continue to receive good rain and thundershowers during the next 24 hours. While northern parts of the state will witness scattered light showers during the similar time period,” predict weathermen at Skymet.
However, in contrary to IMD, Hyderabad, Skymet has predicted that the intensity of light rains is expected to enhance gradually after 24 hours over the state as well as over Hyderabad.
Officials said that the rainfall activity in the last few days reveals that both Telangana and Hyderabad have received rainfall in surplus this season.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rain lashed the city on Saturday evening after a lull of three days. According to Telangana State Development Planning Society figures, Miralam in Bahadurpura received highest rainfall of 5.70 cm upto 7 pm followed by Asifnagar 4.45 cm, Charminar 2.75 cm and Rajendranagar 2.55 cm.
