BANGALORE: A hunt is now on for BS Yeddyurappa's successor for chief minister's post. BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh are in Bangalore as observers to oversee the election of a new legislative party leader.

The party has convened legislature party meeting in the evening where a new leader will be announced. State BJP president KS Eshwarappa, former party president DV Sadananda Gowda, general secretary Ananth Kumar, rural development and panchayat raj (RDPR) minister Jagadish Shettar, law and urban development minister S Suresh Kumar and higher education minister VS Acharya are the top contenders for the post.

After putting up a fight for over 24 hours, Yeddyurappa finally agreed to resign as chief minister of Karnataka. However, his condition is that he would put his papers only after July 31 noon. According to him, the month of Ashada will be over on July 30 on new moon day or amavasya and has been advised by his astrologers to tender resignation on the forenoon of July 31. The buying of time is seen as ploy by the CM's camp to mobilize more numbers in next three days and an attempt to split the party.

However, Yeddyurappa was quick to react: "I am a disciplined worker of BJP. I have decided to tender my resignation to post of CM as per the direction of the party. I have consistently toiled for 40 years to build the party from the scratch and got satisfaction of bringing the party to this level. It is my committed desire to work for the development of the party in future also."

Before this statement, Yeddyurappa spent most of the day demonstrating the opposite trying to send a message that he still has the grip over the party in his state.

Buoyed by the presence of large number of legislators at his residence on Thursday evening, Yeddyurappa at present is holding breakfast meeting with his supporters.
