HP govt moots proposal of pre-marital HIV tests

In a bid to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS and raise awareness on it, the Himachal Pradesh government has mooted the proposal of pre-marital tests.

SHIMLA: In a bid to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS and raise awareness on it, the Himachal Pradesh government has mooted the proposal of pre-marital tests.

Health Minister Rajiv Bindal told PTI today that the objective behind this was to enhance awareness against the dreaded disease to make the state AIDS-free.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had also mentioned the issue in his budget speech.

"Just as 'janampatris' are matched before marriage, the youth will also match AIDS free reports. The society will be motivated for this," Dhumal had said in his speech on Friday.

At present, there are about 3,000 cases of HIV/AIDs in the state with Dhumal's native Hamirpur district topping the list.

Bindal said the state government has planned a vigorous awareness drive against HIV/AIDs.

Dhumal had also said recently that 2,622 Anganwari centres would be considered as Red Ribbon clubs for spreading awareness.
