How Bengaluru’s 28 MLAs spent their local area development funds

First introduced in 2001-02, the LAD fund permits MLAs to spend the money in their respective constituencies on selected activities such as education, infrastructure development, sports, youth services, etc.

The Congress government allocated Rs 2,371 crore under the MLALAD in the last four years. Of this, approximately Rs 54 crore went to the 28 MLAs representing the Assembly Constituencies in Bengaluru.
Every year, under the Karnataka Legislature Local Area Development Scheme (KLLADS), the Karnataka government releases Rs 2 crore to each of the 224 Members of the Legislative Assembly.

First introduced in 2001-02, the LAD fund permits MLAs to spend the money in their respective constituencies on selected activities such as education, infrastructure development, sports, youth services, health, development of women and child, social welfare, backward and minority welfare etc. It, however, does not allow the MLAs to use the money on construction of memorial buildings, loans, maintenance of buildings, inventory etc.

The Congress government allocated Rs 2,371 crore under the MLALAD in the last four years. Of this, approximately Rs 54 crore went to the 28 MLAs representing the Assembly Constituencies in Bengaluru. The Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC), a non-profit that works to improving governance, carried out a study on the pattern of spending of the MLALAD funds in the city during the last four years after Congress came to power. B.PAC CEO Revathy Ashok released the report on Tuesday.
