Village abandoned as area witnessed clashes between Kukis and Nagas in recent past

Guwahati: Kamjong district in Manipur is the new flash point in ethnic-violence ravaged Manipur. Several houses were set on fire in an abandoned village in Manipur's Kamjong district on Wednesday, sparking fresh tension.

A police officer said Khoikai Kuki village, located near Chassad village, was set ablaze by suspected militants at around 5.30 am. "The village was abandoned because the area witnessed clashes between the Kuki and Naga communities in the recent past."

Manipur DGP Mukesh Singh on Wednesday visited Kamjong district to strengthen coordination among security forces and facilitate normalcy between the Naga and Kuki communities, officials said.

Singh, accompanied by senior officials, interacted with the police personnel of the district and discussed the prevailing law and order situation, they said.

DGP also held a joint security coordination meeting with representatives of Assam Rifles and BSF, according to an official statement.

More than 50 people have been killed in ethnic clashes between the two tribal communities in the state since early this year.
