NEW DELHI: Alarmed over their activities in India, particularly J&K, the MHA has slapped a ban on Ansar ul-Ummah (AUU), a frontal organisation of banned Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM). As per MHA, the alleged involvement of AUU has been found in anti-India activities.

A section of HuM, already banned under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was alleged to be behind the hijacking of Indian Airlines IC 814 in 1999 which was undertaken to secure release of JeM’s Maulana Masood Azhar and others. In August 2014, the US amended HuM’s designation to include Ansar ul-Ummah.

According to US Department of State statement, "HuM has repeatedly changed its name in an effort to avoid sanctions. Most recently, HUM created Ansar ul-Ummah as a front organisation...It is a Pakistan based terrorist organisation that seeks the annexation of Kashmir into Pakistan."
