Hoaxes, dummy calls run wild

After serial blasts rocked Ahmedabad and Bangalore, police phone lines were flooded with hoax calls in Mumbai.

MUMBAI: After serial blasts rocked Ahmedabad and Bangalore, police phone lines were flooded with hoax calls in Mumbai, police said on Sunday.

A hoax call was made to the office of a national daily here, threatening to blow up the building, police said. The security officials at the office located near the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in South Mumbai received the call around 4 pm after which they informed the police.

A search of the building was carried out by the bomb detection and disposal squad, but nothing suspicious was found. A youth was detained from Thane district for allegedly sending an SMS to a girl threatening to carry out blasts, a senior anti-terrorism squad official said. The youth who was detained was found to be mentally unstable and has indulged in similar acts in the past, the official said. Security was also tight at the Bombay Stock Exchange building after a private news channel said blasts would be carried out there.
