SHILLONG: A social organization working for the welfare of truck owners has submitted a memorandum to Mehgalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang to look into the problems faced by them.
The Hynneiwtrep National People Federation (HNPF) led by its president Ronnie Ranee submitted a memorandum to Lapang on Monday, HNPF sources said on Tuesday.
The memorandum alleges about rampant extortion and harassment by the state police on truck drivers carrying coal at various check posts along the National Highways.
It suggested that the state government should issue some kind of trading license or permit to check the monopoly of coal business by middlemen.
It alleged that local coal traders were exploited by the middlemen who monopolised the business by purchasing all the coal from owners.
The memorandum further alleged that coal laden trucks were paying multiple taxes to the state government, police department, district councils and state transport authority and asked the state government to find out ways and means to solve the problem of multiple taxes.
The HNPF president said they were contemplating of testing the blood of all the truck drivers for HIV tests in various health centres.
