Guwahati: A 1986 batch Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Hitesh Dev Sarma is the new coordinator of National Register of Citizens (NRC).

He is likely to take charge on Monday. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered transfer of NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela following which Assam government started haunt to select the new NRC coordinator.

Dev Sarma had earlier worked in the NRC directorate. He was involved in the initial works of NRC which started in 2013.


Later he moved out of NRC directorate in 2016. The NRC coordinator is the commissioner level post.

Sarma was working as secretary in department of Finance and Urban development, government of Assam.

The next process of sending letters to those left out of final NRC with reason for their non-inclusion and process of moving to Foreigners tribunal will start will start this month.

The final NRC was published on August 31 last found a total of 3, 11, 21,004 persons eligible for inclusion in the registry leaving out 19, 06,657 persons.

Several organisations have expressed their unhappiness with the final figures for they feel that it to less given the fact that Assam has for long battled the problem of illegal influx from Bangladesh.
