Historic triple talaq verdict: Who said what

The Supreme Court termed the Muslim practice of triple talaq "unconstitutional", "arbitrary" and "not part of Islam". Here is how politicians, activists and social media influncers reacted on the apex court's remarkable order:

BJP president Amit Shah welcomed the SC's verdict on triple talaq. He said the verdict is the "dawn of new era towards right to equality for Muslim women".

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy also welcomed it saying it has paved the way forward for bringing reform.

BJP leader Shazia Ilmi termed triple talaq as anti-Quran, anti-Constitution and anti-humanity.

Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi termed the judgement "another step towards gender justice and gender equality."

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel said, "we are confident that this is the end of bad practice of triple talaq".

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the implementation of SC's verdict "is going to be a great Herculean task".

Congress also welcomed the Supreme Court verdict on Triple Talaq holding it unconstitutional, saying it was a step forward towards gender justice and equality.

Congress leader Salman Khurshid welcomed the judgement, saying "it is a good decision". However, he said the reasoning behind the decision was as important as the decision itself and one should see it before coming to any conclusion.

"We hail the judgement, it protects personal laws and at the same time deprecates the practice of TripleTalaq," said Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal.

Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee believes that the discrimination due to triple Talaq will end now.
