Hingora, who supplied rifle to Dutt, gets 9 yrs

A special court on Friday sentenced film producer Samir Hingora, who supplied an AK 56 rifle to actor Sanjay Dutt, to nine years’ in jail in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

MUMBAI: A special court on Friday sentenced film producer Samir Hingora, who supplied an AK 56 rifle to actor Sanjay Dutt, to nine years’ in jail in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

It also sentenced four other accused in the case to imprisonment ranging from eight years to life. Hingora, film producer and proprietor of Magnum Video, who had supplied the rifle to Dutt on January 19, 1993 at the instance of Anees Ibrahim, brother of the prime accused Dawood Ibrahim, was sentenced to nine years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. Hingora, a heart patient who has undergone angioplasty, has spent about six years’ in jail as an undertrial.

Thirty-three-year-old Niyaz Ahmed Shaikh, who was involved in the blasts conspiracy up to the end, got two life sentences, which would run concurrently.

However, Kode said Niaz did not take part in actual commission, that is planting of vehicle bombs. Except for that, he attended the conspiracy meetings and even obtained weapons training in Pakistan prior to the blasts. The judge also imposed fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

Farooq Iliaz Motorwala, who went to Dubai on a forged passport and participated in a conspiracy meeting, was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 13 years and asked to deposit a fine of Rs 50,000. Motorwala was convicted for being a party to the conspiracy, but there was no evidence to link him with actual blasts. He has been in custody for over thirteen years as an undertrial, so once he pays the fine, he will be released.

An aide of blasts mastermind Tiger Memon, Gulam Hafiz Shaikh was sentenced to eight years’ rigorous imprisonment and asked to deposit a fine of Rs 25,000. Gulam, a driver, drove the weapons and RDX-laden truck to Mumbai. Court had held that he knew about the conspiracy and nature of goods he was transporting.

Shaikh Mohammed Ehtesham, who had participated in the Shekhadi landing — he escorted the contraband to the coast — was sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. Out of hundred convicts, the court has awarded sentence to 66 till Friday.
