Hindu girl files case against Muslim boy of forcing her to convert to Islam before marriage

LUCKNOW: A case was filed under UP’s Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance, 2020 on Thursday after a Hindu girl in Hardoi accused a Muslim youth, she had been in a relationship with for two years, of forcing her to convert to Islam before they were to register their marriage in court.

The police has registered a complaint on Thursday under charges of rape and section 3/5 of the new law that deals with punishing anyone who seeks to use force or allurement to convert or punish those converting for marriage.

“The girl has given a statement that she was in a relationship with a Muslim boy of her own village for the last two years when she was a minor. During those two years, the girl has said, the boy also established physical relationships with her. After she became a major on November 30, she came to a Hardoi court to register her marriage. However, that is when the boy told her that he will not marry her unless she converts,” SHO of Shahbad police station in Hardoi, Shivshankar Singh told ET.


The ordinance was promulgated on November 28. Singh said the girl has been sent for medical examination as is mandatory when there is a rape allegation.

This is one of the few cases under the newly promulgated ordinance under which a girl herself has filed a complaint. In most cases, until now, complaints have been filed by the girls’ parents /relatives.
