Hillary Clinton backs Indo-US nuclear deal: Top aide

Senator Hillary Clinton was never "lukewarm" to the Indo-US civil nuclear deal and the Democratic Presidential hopeful is fully backing the agreement after studying the issue, her close aide has said.

WASHINGTON: Senator Hillary Clinton was never "lukewarm" to the Indo-US civil nuclear deal and the Democratic Presidential hopeful is fully backing the agreement after studying the issue, her close aide has said.

"While she has been in the Senate, she's worked on economic issues to strengthen ties between the two countries. She was in favour of the US-India civilian nuclear agreement," Chairman of Clinton's campaign, Terry McAuliffe has said.

The top Clinton advisor rejected the notion that the New York senator, currently languishing behind her rival, Barack Obama, was lukewarm to the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, stressing that she only took time to make a decision.

"I don't think she had second thoughts. She took her time to make a decision. Hillary is very thoughtful. She looked at the issue and did not make comments on it publicly before that," he told India Abroad newspaper.

"When she made up her mind, she decided to vote in favour of the nuclear deal and was a supporter of it. But, she came about it at her own timetable and that's what she will be as President. But, you know, at the end of the day, she voted for it and that's what matters," McAuliffe, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, stressed.

Asked about how Clinton was going to make ties with India stronger especially at a time when issues like Iran keep cropping up, he said: "We are going to have disagreements with nations all the time and this happens.

"I have disagreements with my best friends all the time and you don't always agree on everything. But what you will have with Hillary Clinton is you will have an open relationship, you will have a honest relationship."
