Hike in taxes to help complete Games projects
NEW DELHI: With months left for the Commonwealth Games to begin, Delhi government on Monday made it clear it won’t be putting new funds into the mega event.

After the meagre allocation of funds from the central government earlier this year, there had been much speculation about how Delhi government would mobilize funds for the remaining work for the Games. The budget, however, preferring to underscore the work done by the government for the upcoming event. However, government sources admitted that the hike in taxes will go a long way in funding the Games projects.

Highlighting the projects that were taken up for the Commonwealth Games, finance minister A K Walia spoke about the government’s ‘‘best efforts’’ for timely completion of all projects. The comment comes days after CM Sheila Dikshit said she was ‘‘nervously confident’’about Delhi hosting a memorable Games. Walia, meanwhile, preferred to speak about the projects that have been linked to the organizing of the Games like construction of flyovers, streetscaping, new signages, parking sites and stadia like Thyagraj, Chhatrasal, Ludlow Castle, Talkatora and Shivaji. He also pointed out the purchase of low-floor AC and non-AC buses.

Talking about the government’s initiatives to preserve major historical monuments for the Games, he said Connaught Place was one of the areas which had been specially renovated. This is besides the cultural events the government will be organizing for the tourists.
