Hike in fee for getting information under RTI criticised
Civil rights activists today strongly criticised Chandigarh administration for raising the fee for seeking information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, saying it was tantamount to "scuffling the fundamental right" of a person.
Describing the move as highly deplorable a civil rights activist Hemant Goswami told reporters that it was an attempt "to scuffle the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution and also defeat the intended objectives of the RTI Act."
Chandigarh administration has raised the RTI application fee from Rs 10 to Rs 50 per application.
The activists including Hitender Jain and H C Arora further said that they would now obtain information under the provisions of section 76 of the Indian Evidence Act 1872 which provides for obtaining a certified copy of any public document without payment of any application fee.
