Hijack scare on Kandahar-bound plane at Delhi airport

The Ariana Afghan Airlines plane took off nearly two hours later after "satisfactory" security checks, sources said.

A hijack scare was triggered at Delhi airport today, when the pilot of an Ariana Afghan Air flight between Delhi and Kandahar pressed the hijack button on the aircraft by mistake. The aircraft was immediately diverted to the isolation bay by the airport security.

“Ariana Afghan Airlines (DEL-KDH) whilst taxying for take off returned to Isolation bay after the crew pressed the hijack button. After the basic checking the flight finally departed at 15:30 today,” said sources in the security establishment at Delhi airport.

The source added that the aircraft was cordoned off by the Airport Security Group (ASG).


“The aircraft was cleared for departure on confirmation that it was an error by the Captain,” said the official source, who added that the pilot wrote an application saying that the button was pressed by mistake.

The flight had 9 crew members & 124 passengers (including 1 infant) on board the aircraft today dept.

Jet Airways provides security services to the airline at Delhi airport and secondary security checks were carried out of all passengers, the source informed.

In the secondary security check, the passengers are frisked again before boarding the aircraft.
