GUWAHATI: The second phase of polls in Assam continued with the trend of high turnout, and was by and large incident-free. Three constituencies of Assam that went to the polls on Saturday witnessed an over 75% turnout. In 2009, the average turnout was 69.70%.

East Tripura seat, which also went to the polls, recorded 82% turnout. Two constituencies of Karimganj, Silchar in Barak Valley and the autonomous council Lok Sabha constituency, which includes the two hill districts of KarbiAnglong and Dima Haso, pulled a major surprise with a large number of voters turning out to vote.

Assam’s additional chief electoral officer RC Jain said: “Around 20 EVMs malfunctioned but those were replaced.” KarbiAnglong and Dima Haso are insurgency-infested areas.
