The state government is likely to allow more hotels, especially in major tourist destinations, to open bars as per the request of the tourism industry.
State finance minister Thomas Issac said on Thursday the tourism sector in the state has suffered a setback due to the policy of controlled liquor supply.
Tourism industry provides employment to more than a lakh people in the state. However, as a result of the decision to close down bars except the five-star ones, meetings and conventions have shifted to other states or countries.
The liquor policy has affected the revenue collection of the state, he said. “We have to have a realistic approach to the problem, he added.

Earlier, the CPM secretariat meeting had reportedly agreed to bring about changes in the liquor policy. Meanwhile, Bevco – the state beverages corporation – has been working overtime to comply with the SC order to shift liquor outlets from the roadside of highways before March 31.
