Here're solutions to B'luru's traffic nightmare at Central Silk Board junction

Ashwin Mahesh, urban expert and Syed Imran, civic activist from HSR Layout, share their views on the ways to deal with dreaded traffic intersection.

Here're solutions to B'luru's traffic nightmare at Central Silk Board junction
The Central Silk Board (CSB) junction, which is the connecting point between Hosur Road and Outer Ring Road, has come to be the city's most dreaded traffic intersection. Its notoriety has earned it a Twitter account (@silk_board), which reads like a running commentary of a traffic nightmare.

Ashwin Mahesh urban expert

Build Peripheral Ring Road from E City towards Sarjapur

Ashwin says the failure to build the Peripheral Ring Road all these years and the absence of off-and-on ramps on the Electronics City expressway have turned CSB into the single decision point for travel into the city and through the city from Bengaluru South. His approach to solving the problem is linked to a holistic view on South B'luru's mobility.

SOLUTIONS

Strengthen all east-bound roads from Hosur Road between Electron ics City and CSB or begin building the Peripheral Ring Road quickly from Electronics City towards Sarjapur Road, Whitefield and Hoskote

Introduce ramps at two points along the Electronics City expressway so that people can enter and exit the high-speed arterial in more places

At the intersection, build a seamless interchange for vehicle movement through cloverleaf ramps on all four sides so that right turns are eliminated

Possibly the most important, build a big transit centre at the junction as part of the proposed Bus Rapid Transit corridor

Triple the bus services on Hosur Road

All this plus the mobility of South B'luru can be improved at a cost of Rs 500 crore and in 18 months

Build a Parallel Elevated Road & Add More Ramps

Syed believes that no scientific thought has gone into designing the traffic arteries. The CSB junction, he says. has not been designed for the long term and the explosive growth of the area was not taken into consideration. He has redesigned the junction, which he believes is time and cost-effective

SOLUTIONS

With minimal land acquisition, construct a parallel elevated road (span).

The new span will have two ramps and the existing one will need modification to add two ramps.

Old and new spans have to be connected at two places to facilitate u-turns.

Those going towards BTM Layout, Singasandra and other areas located between Electronics City and Madiwala cannot use the flyover in the absence of ramps. So, these six ramps connecting to Hosur Road via the two flyovers will ease traffic flow.

This can be executed in six months and at a cost of Rs 30-Rs 50 crore.

The result: Traffic can move from all four di rections at once at 60 kmph without the traffic lights.
