Here are five long speeches by Indian politicians including PM Narendra Modi

PM Narendra Modi's Independence Day address - which was approximately 94 minutes long - was the longest Independence Day speech in history. In his speech, he called on the 125 crore-strong "family" of Indians to unite and fight against social evils, and said financial growth wasn't the only kind of growth India needed to aim for. Without explicitly mentioning the recent attacks against Dalits, he said: "Violence, cruelty have no place in India."

In making such a long speech, PM Modi broke his own record from last year, when he made a speech that in turn reportedly broke a record held by the first Indian PM, Jawaharlal Nehru.

On Independence Day in 2015, PM Narendra Modi spoke for 86 minutes at India's Red Fort. It is the second longest ever Independence Day speech in Indian history.

2014
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's very first budget speech lasted longer than two hours.

2012
President Pranab Mukherjee, who in 2014 was the Union Finance Minister in the UPA government, gave a budget speech that lasted nearly an hour and 50 minutes.

In 1957, VK Krishna Menon addressed the United Nations Security Council for nearly eight hours. He was defending India's position on Kashmir.

1947
On the night of August 14, Jawaharlal Nehru made his famous 'tryst with destiny' speech. The speech was 72 minutes long, and was the longest Independence Day speech in Indian history until Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his Independence Day address in 2015, India Samvad reported.
