Heavy showers lash north India but cold wave unlikely

A strong western disturbance, characterised by rain-bearing clouds, is active in the North.

NEW DELHI: North India experienced heavy showers on Thursday bringing cheer to farmers, but the weather is likely to be moderate in the plains although the Himalayan region will continue to get more showers and snow.

A strong western disturbance, characterised by rain-bearing clouds, is active in the North, which has brought rainfall to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh as well as heavy rainfall or snow in many parts of Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

However, the plains are expected to have dry weather in a day, and the rainfall is not likely to leave a cold wave. “For the next five days, temperature will be moderate, and there should be no cold wave till the 1st of February,” Devendra Pradhan, deputy director general of Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi, said.

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) saw around 6 to 8 mm rainfall on Thursday, according to IMD data. Rainfall activity in NCR should end by Thursday evening, said Pradhan. The weather office had issued warning of heavy rainfall in north India on Thursday. for the following five days the only weather warning is for coastal Tamil Nadu which is likely to get heavy showers on Friday and Saturday.

The minimum temperatures are not likely to change significantly for about two days in the north, the India Meteorological Department said in its latest forecast. However, the maximum temperature is likely to fall by 2 to 4 degrees thereafter, the forecast added. Delhi faced biting cold in the middle of this month, but the temperature has gone up lately, with minimum temperature at 16 degrees Celsius and maximum at 25 degrees on Thursday. Temperature has been above normal for the past four to five days.
