AGARTALA: At least 2000 families were affected due to heavy downpour and the resultant water logging in different parts of the West Tripura district, including this capital city, officials said today.

Resham Bagan, Kalikapur, Jaipur of the district and most part of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) were waterlogged due to heavy rain for the last three days.

Water of Haura, the main river of the capital city, is flowing much above the danger level Sub-divisional Magistrate of Sadar, M L Das, told reporters.

Due to flowing of water over the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Kashipur and Resham Bagan, vehicular movement was disrupted.

Rescue teams with boats were pressed into service and the affected families, who took shelter in government buildings and schools were given food by the district administration.

Officials said a crack developed in the embankment of the river Haura at Jaipur near here last night which was repaired.

The Met office said, 1040 mm rain was recorded since June 1 to till date.
