NEW DELHI: Sensitive districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Meerut, Aligarh, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar, witnessed heavy deployment of forces on Sunday in the aftermath of the violent anti-CAA protests which began on Thursday. Meanwhile, there are reports that one person has died of injuries he sustained during Friday’s protests in Kanpur.

Apart from PAC, Civil Police and UP police’s Quick Response Teams (QRTs), UP police have deployed Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) in sensitive districts to keep the situation under control. As per reports, nine companies of CPMF have been deployed in Lucknow.

In Meerut, three companies of CPMF have been posted. Police intensified patrolling in the cities on Sunday. “In sensitive districts, we have divided areas into different zones, sectors and sub-sectors. Senior officers have been asked to camp in all such sectors/zones to ensure proper supervision work,” a source in Meerut police told ET. Meerut range IG Alok Singh told ET: “Police are keeping a close watch in sensitive areas in my range.” Meerut range covers Meerut, Ghaziabad, Baghpat and Gautam Budha Nagar districts. In Meerut range, about 18,000 policemen have been deployed to keep a watch on two super zones, 42 zones, 142 sectors and 9 sub-sectors.


Senior police officials, including SP-rank and DSP-rank officials, have been rushed to different districts for proper implementation of Section 144 of the CrPC.

ADG of Kanpur zone, Prem Prakash, claimed that there was peace in his area on Sunday. “We have ensured proper deployment of forces at the right places. We are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he replied to a question.

UP’s director general of police (DGP) OP Singh said the official death figures in the anti-CAA protests is 15.
