The Bombay High Court has began hearing on the Suleiman Bakery case, one of the 1993 Mumbai riot cases where police are accused of killing innocent people.

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has began hearing on the Suleiman Bakery case, one of the 1993 Mumbai riot cases where police are accused of killing innocent people.

Justice D G Karnik after hearing to the counsels adjourned the case till February 22.

Nine persons were killed in alleged police firing at Suleiman Bakery in south Mumbai on January 9, 1993. Justice Srikrishna Commission had said in its report that all those killed were innocent people.

But in April 2003, a sessions court discharged all the ten policemen, including former Mumbai Police commissioner Ramdeo Tyagi, who had led the police team.

The sessions court held that they were acting in discharge of official duty.

Two persons, Noorul Ahmed and Ashfaque Ahmed, have challenged the decision before the High Court.

Justice D G Karnik today asked their lawyer if they were aware of law laid down by Supreme Court on prosecution of public servant more than two years after the incident.

Petitioners' lawyer Shakeel Ahmed sought time for the reply. The case was then adjourned to February 22.

Yesterday, the state agreed to transfer the Hari Masjid case, where too police are accused of opening fire on innocent people sheltering inside mosque, to CBI.
