Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy questioned the propriety of involving the judiciary in political disputes and said political leaders should exercise restraint while commenting on Constitutional authorities.
“Dragging the Chief Justice of India into politics is inappropriate. Rahul Gandhi should demonstrate greater political maturity. How can one expect the Chief Justice to meet political leaders to discuss such matters simply because they seek an appointment?” Kumaraswamy said.
His remarks came in the context of Gandhi requesting an appointment with CJI Surya Kant amid the protests in Delhi. The CJI, however, declined to meet.
Kumaraswamy alleged that such an approach reflected a lack of respect for Constitutional institutions and the dignity of the offices they represent. He maintained that political differences should not result in Constitutional authorities being drawn into partisan confrontations.
“The Constitutional institutions and the individuals occupying Constitutional offices must be treated with due respect,” the minister said.
