HC seeks Center's response on toll collection on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

Delhi HC has issued notice to the Centre, NCT government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on a PIL seeking exemption of daily-commuters from paying the toll on the new Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre, NCT government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on a PIL seeking exemption of daily-commuters from paying the toll on the new Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Refusing to grant a stay on the collection of the toll at this stage, the Division Bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Reva Khetrapal directed the parties to file their replies by April 23.

It was alleged in the petition that paying the toll charge every day by daily-commuters between Delhi and Gurgaon would be a financial burden on them.

Vivek Bharat Ram, who had filed the PIL, said that the government should either exempt the daily-commuters from paying the road tax or construct alternative roads to lessen their financial burden.

The much-delayed Rs 1,000 crore 27-km-long expressway was finally thrown open on January 23, reducing the travel time of thousands of commuters and international air passengers.

Vehicle-users are supposed to pay a toll for using the Expressway which is collected three toll plazas located at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi-Gurgaon Border and 42nd Milestone.
