HC seeks Andhra Pradesh and Centre views on probing phone tapping charges

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has sought to know from the state and central governments and telecom service providers if they had objections to a probe on allegations that phones of judges of the HC were tapped.

Responding to a petition filed by lawyer AN Grace on Tuesday, the court based in Amaravati asked the petitioner to furnish evidence that phones of certain HC judges were being illegally tapped and their movements monitored.

A day before the HC notice, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu had in a letter to PM Modi sought a central probe into alleged phone tapping carried out by the Reddy government, violating fundamental rights of citizens and right to privacy.


The controversy was triggered after Telugu daily Andhra Jyothi claimed in a report last week that smartphones of some judges were being tapped using sophisticated surveillance equipment.
