HC raps MCGM for neglecting maternity hospital in Malad
The Bombay High Court on Thursday came down heavily on the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) for failing to maintain a maternity hospital in suburban Malad.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice J P Devadhar directed the MCGM Executive Engineer to remain present in the court on Friday for an explanation.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by a resident of the area concerning the dilapidated condition of the Abdul Kalam Azad Municipal Hospital building, which includes an operation theatre, and lack of facilities like a sonography machine.
After looking at the photographs of the building taken on Saturday, the Chief Justice told the MCGM counsel, "If this is the building and you open up people here (operate), you must be held responsible for deaths by negligence."
When MCGM's lawyer, Preeti Purandare, told the court that renovation work was being undertaken and it was at the tendering stage, the Chief Justice said, "Why don't you treat corporation officers here? The hospital will then be repaired within a day."
Purandare informed the court that the condition of the operation theatre was not as dilapidated as the outside wall of the building. She said the operation theatre was used only for family planning operations and nothing else. Also, the theatre was completely sanitized before the procedure.
The court asked how many "years" the Corporation would need to renovate the hospital and what would the poor people in the area do in the mean time.
