HC asks state to list heritage structures on mill lands
With properties occupied by defunct mills in the city set to be redeveloped, the Maharashtra government was on Wednesday directed by the Bombay High Court to identify all the heritage structures that stand on such lands and present a list by Novem...
The court asked the Maharashtra Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) to submit its report on heritage structures on mill lands to the municipal commissioner within 10 days. In fact, the MHCC had been directed in 2005 to prepare the report.
Following the receipt of the report, the commissioner has been directed to decide on the issue and forward his report to the state government within a month.
A division bench of chief justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice DY Chandrachud was hearing a petition filed by the Indian National Trust for Arts And Cultural Heritage (intach) seeking a stay on any development or demolition of structures on the mill lands, as they were heritage structures and had historical significance.
Following the declaration of the National Textile Corporation (NTC) as a sick industrial company it had sought permission from the municipal corporation to develop the mill lands, which was approved for seven mills in 2004.
Under the approval, five of the mills were to be sold and the remaining were required to be handed over to the municipal corporation. Opposing the demolition of the existing structures, INTACH had approached the High Court.
