CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday turned down cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu’s plea to surrender before it and directed the duo, convicted in a case of culpable homicide, to approach a local court.

A Division Bench of Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Justice Baldev Singh directed that Sidhu and his friend should surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Chandigarh. The duo were convicted for causing the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh during a scuffle in Patiala in 1988.

In his application, Sidhu said he was willing to surrender before the court as his case is now before the Supreme Court since the suspension of sentence. Sidhu had resigned from the Lok Sabha following the conviction on December 1 last year.

A large number of Sidhu’s supporters who had followed him, were not allowed to enter court premises.

The former cricketer has appealed in the Supreme Court against the conviction and the next hearing is fixed for January 12.
