HC asks govt to maintain status quo

Madhya Pradesh High Court has asked the state government to maintain status quo on its move to transfer 87 acre land of Barkatullah University to an institute of biotechnology.

JABALPUR: Madhya Pradesh High Court has asked the state government to maintain status quo on its move to transfer 87 acre land of Barkatullah University to an institute of biotechnology.
Justice U C Maheshwari, while hearing university's appeal against the move to transfer the land yesterday, asked Bhopal collector to submit a reply on it within a week.
Bhopal district administration had issued a notification in July 2006 aimed at transfering the land to the institute.
The university was allotted the land in 1973 and was planning to use it under expansions plans, university counsel contended.
The government had acquired the land without university's permission and had turned down its objections that were invited through a public notice, university sources said.
The move had earlier trigerred protest by students and university staff who had staged demonstration in the state capital asking government to refrain from the land transfer.
