Haryana renames Gurgaon as Gurugram, Mewat as Nuh

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Government has decided to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram.

It was in the recently concluded "Global investors summit" at Gurgaon, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal had dedicated major part of his speech on explaining the meaning of Gurgaon in front of the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and the who's who os the corporate world.

"Haryana is a historic land of the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a centre of learning. It had been known as Gurgaon since the times of Guru Dronacharya. Gurgaon was a great center of education where the princes used to be provided education, " Chief Minister had said.

Taking the same idea further Haryana Government on Tuesday renamed Gurgaon as Gurugram. Government also renamed Mewat as Nuh.

"Since long the people of the area had been demanding that Gurgaon be renamed as Gurugram.

State Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu maintains decision to change the name of Gurgaon as Gurugram has been taken on the basis of the representations received at several forums that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram.



"Mewat in fact is a geographical and cultural unit and not a town. It is spread beyond Haryana in the adjoining States of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Headquarters of Mewat district is at Nuh town. The people of area and the elected representatives had been demanding that the name of Mewat be changed as Nuh," Captain Abhimanyu said.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal has approved the proposal to change the names of Gurgaon and Mewat.
