Haryana minister Kavita Jain favours ban on liquor sale

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Women and Child Development minister Kavita Jain on Saturday said that “as a woman” she feels that prohibition should be imposed in the state. She however added that such a move would not work if no such ban existed in the neighbouring states. “As a woman I would say prohibition should be imposed,” she said. “Haryana shares its boundaries with states where there is no prohibition.”

Prohibition had been imposed in Haryana in 1996 by the Bansi Lal-led Haryana Vikas Party-BJP coalition government but it was lifted by the same regime in 1998.

Jain said that she felt that the attempt had failed as liquor was available in the neighbouring states. “Earlier also probably one of the reasons for prohibition failing in Haryana was that liquor was available in neighbouring states. There were instances when people brought liquor (into the state) in buses and through other means,” she said.
