Hard negotiations are going on to secure the release of six Indians, working for RPG Group company KEC International in Afghanistan’s northern Baghlan province, abducted by suspected Taliban militants on Sunday, but there has been no success so far.
Indian authorities are in touch with their Afghan counterparts who, in turn, are talking to local authorities and village elders to get the Indians freed.
“We are aware of the abduction of Indian nationals from Baghlan province in Afghanistan. We are in contact with the Afghan authorities and further details are being ascertained,” an MEA spokesperson said on Sunday.
Baghlan governor Abdulhai Nemati, claimed that the Taliban group has abducted seven employees of KEC, adding that they are trying to release the abductees through tribe elders and mediation. Persons speaking on the condition of anonymity indicated that the abducted engineers could be held in an area near Pul-e Khomri in Baghlan in Northern Afghanistan.
India’s presence in Northern Afghanistan and in the power sector in that region is being resented by certain forces who may be behind the abductions, feared Afghan officials. It’s understood that the Indians were travelling without armed guard when they were kidnapped.
