Harbans Kapoor to be Uttarakhand speaker

DEHRADUN: Six-time BJP legislator Harbans Kapoor was on Sunday elected speaker of the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha. However, a formal announcement will be made on Monday, said Vidhan Sabha secretary Mahesh Chandra.

There were no other nominations. Mr Kapoor had never lost an assembly election, winning for a record six times in a row.

Meanwhile, Congress legislature party in the state authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to nominate the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.
