Haneef case: Aus govt unlikely to face inquiry before polls

The Australian government is unlikely to face a formal inquiry into the handling of a case relating to Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef, before polls later this year

MELBOURNE: The Australian government is unlikely to face a formal inquiry into the handling of a case relating to Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef, before polls later this year.

The doctor's lawyers are focusing on a hearing into the revocation of his work visa, scheduled to take place in Brisbane on August 8.

They said they will consider asking the Ombudsman to investigate the authorities' handling of their client's case only after the visa issue is over.

The Federal Government controls both houses in Parliament, so the only real prospect of a review is through a Senate estimates hearing.

The next round of hearings is not until after the federal election, ABC reported on Friday.

The government came under heavy criticism for its shoddy investigation into the case with reports of political motives doing the rounds.

27-year old Haneef, whose work visa was cancelled by the Australian Immigration minister on character grounds, was released from custody Friday last after terror charges against him in connection with the failed car bombings in the UK were dropped due to lack of evidence. He returned to India at the weekend.
